What if chocolate was a necessary currency and not just a commodity? For thousands of years this was a fact in ancient South American cultures.
Every one loves a bar of chocolate – but what would you say if you could pay the gas version in the manner of a box of chocolates or purchase a car in imitation of chocolate eclairs? Well, if you lived in Central America circular about the 1500’s – chocolate (or at least the cocoa bean) was hard currency and, according to some, more necessary than gold.
The Cocoa Bean in Central American Cultures

But, just as behind the Aztecs, it was restricted to the extremely rich due to the tall cost of bringing it from South America to Europe.
